Grandview Grove - Prahran
We converted a double brick Californian bungalow in Prahran into three high-quality, sophisticated modern apartments. This challenging 12-month project took place during the Victorian bushfires and the height of Covid. Contending with smoky air and Covid restrictions held up the building process, limited the number of people on site simultaneously and imposed strict noise constraints. Despite these significant setbacks, we delivered the project on time while exceeding the client’s expectations.
Complex build
The client’s goal was to build as many apartments on the block as possible without compromising quality and space. This complex project involved raked walls and cranked steel. Because the engineering didn’t line up with the architecture, we worked with the structural engineer to overcome the issues. An envelope-style building worked structurally while maximising the internal usable area.
Quality, modern apartments
The original home was renovated 30–40 years ago. We aimed to build for quality and longevity, so we started much of the internal build from scratch. We ripped up the floors and levelled things out to ensure we started from a proper base. The result was immaculate, with no humps and bumps and a quality structure from the bottom up.
Preserving the heritage overlay
We put significant effort into preserving the 100-year-old home’s heritage façade. This included bracing the roof and home to ensure that the home didn’t collapse as we worked. The result was a high-quality outcome that seamlessly blends old and new.
